The undercard debate featured former HP CEO Carly Fiorina, Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, and former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore.
This debate focused a lot of time on the government, not attacking the other candidates running for president. The candidates mostly focused on the red tape and the failed promises in Washington and what they would do to make the government more efficient and pass legislation to help foster a better economy and bring jobs back to the country.
Sen. Rick Santorum said he would send troops to the Middle East to take ground from the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), saying that would hurt the standing of the terrorist organization around the world.
Gov. Huckabee said he does not trust Russian President Vladimir Putin, but would welcome his help in the fight against ISIS. In addition to military force, he said the U.S. has to fight ISIS on the Internet. This would be done by shutting down their social media accounts.
Asked whether decreasing the size of government is impossible, Gov. Huckabee said it is possible if a president who cares about the average American is elected.
Gov. Gilmore said he would veto any gun control legislation that came across his desk.
Sen. Santorum said his tax plan would bring three and a half million jobs back to the country with incentives for companies to bring jobs back.
Fiorina was asked about her statement during the last debate where she said she enjoys spending time with her husband and why she made a personal attack after saying she wouldn’t. She claimed that it was not a personal attack but a fact.
Huckabee said there is no way that the government could give people free college and many other welfare programs without paying for it.
Santorum said Washington needs elected officials who can disagree on issues but still be respectful and work together.
One the biggest loser of the night was the media. From the beginning of the debate the candidates focused on the immense amount of attention given to GOP front-runner Donald Trump. Moderator Martha MacCallum was shamed by Fiorina for asking Sen. Rick Santorum why he did not attend the March for Life event.
