Where Marco Rubio Stands On Some Of The Top Issues
The Budget
Rubio supports balancing the federal budget within 10 years and has advocating freezing spending for everything buy defense at 2008 levels. This year he proposed raising defense spending. He also voted for the Senate Republican plan which balances the budget and cuts $4.3 trillion in spending.
Climate Change
Rubio believes that climate change is real, but does not believe that mankind has had the effect on the climate that scientist and Democrats have claimed.
Cuba
Rubio wants to block President Obama’s efforts to work with the Cuban government saying the normalization comes “at the Cuban people’s expense.” He also supports keeping Cuba on the list of state sponsors of terror.
Obamacare
Rubio wants to replace the Affordable Care Act and replace it with new tax credits to help people purchase insurance.
The Internet
Rubio opposes the new government “net neutrality” policy which says that providers should not charge different prices for different types of content.
Immigration
While running for the Senate Rubio opposed a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants. In 2013, he co-sponsored a comprehensive immigration bill that would have created a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants. After the bill died in the House, Rubio told reports he favors two separate bills one to secure the border and one to deal with the immigrants already in the country.
Social Issues
Although Rubio believes that marriage is between a man and a woman he says that the Supreme Court decision on gay marriages is the law of the land that the country must abide by it. He does believe that some businesses like wedding photography should be allowed to turn away gay customers, and others like hotels should not.
Rubio co-sponsored a 2013 Senate bill to ban abortion after 20 weeks since fertilization, with exceptions for the life of the mother, rape, or incest.
Taxes
Rubio wants to cut corporate taxes to 25% and simplify the individual tax brackets by using just two rates: 15% for those earning under $75,000, and 35% for those earning above that. Capital gains taxes would be done away with and families would be eligible for a new $2,500-per-child tax credit.
Iran
Rubio wants to toughen sanctions on Iran and end the nuclear deal. He believes the U.S. should continue to increase sanctions on Iran until its government “completely gives up its nuclear ambitions.”
Islamic State
Rubio wants to increase the president’s power to fight ISIS. He has also strongly opposed President Obama’s war powers request, which sets a three year time limit and would rule out “enduring offensive ground combat operations.” Rubio also said he would like a permanent U.S. presence in Iraq to counteract ISIS.
