Good Thursday Morning!
Business:
Netflix Inc. added a higher than expected 3.28 million streaming subscribers in June as the company's profit decreased amid a plan of international expansion. The company plans to expand to more countries by the end of next year, with Japan Portugal, Italy and Spain joining later this year. The company's profit fell 65% in the quarter as costs increased to buy content.
History:
This day in history in 1945, the Manhattan Project ended following the successful testing of the first atom bomb in Alamogordo, New Mexico. Plans for the creation of a uranium bomb by the Allies were established as early as 1939 after Italian physicist Enrico Fermi met with U.S. Navy officials to discuss the use of fissionable materials for military purposes. The original budget for the Manhattan Project was $6,000 but ended up costing a total of $2 billion.
International:
Greek lawmakers voted to approve the terms of a bailout plan early Thursday morning. The measures include harsh austerity measures and economic changes - which go against the non-austerity platform Greek Prime Minister Tsipras' was elected on. The vote to accept the bailout comes almost a week after Greek voters voted against a similar bailout deal.
National:
HealthCare.gov allowed fake applicants to maintain coverage and re-enroll this year. 11 fake applicants were allowed to re-enroll despite their fake paperwork. Six of the applicants received notices that they were being terminated, but after Government Accountability Office investigators posing as consumers called the federal exchange and five out of the six were reinstated with larger subsidies.
New York
The famous toy store F.A.O. Schwarz closed its store on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan on Wednesday. Toys "R" Us, which has owned the store since 2009, said its decision to close the store was due to rising costs in rent on Fifth Avenue but that the company was looking for another location in Midtown.
Have a great day!
