This day in history in 1777, New York State elected Brigadier General George Clinton as its first governor. Clinton was the longest serving governor in United States' history serving till 1795, and again from 1801 to 1804. In 1805 he was elected vice president and served under Presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Madison until his death in 1812.

Under tight pressure from a new deadline, Greece requested a three year loan from the eurozone's bailout fund as the country began to take steps to avoid a historic financial collapse. The country did not specify how it would take steps to strengthen its government's finances, nor did it describe the amount of the loan it requested.
